 Pages: 1  2  3

Our History and Heritage
Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services has a long and rich tradition of identifying and meeting the healthcare needs of Floyd county and the surrounding areas. In 1947, 16 local civic leaders saw a need for additional hospital services to expand the aging St. Edward's Hospital in New Albany. Financed by donations, a bond issue and a Hill-Burton Grant, the hospital was constructed and equipped for a total of $1,510,284.

On June 22, 1953, the Memorial Hospital of Floyd County was dedicated in the memory of Floyd County community members who served during war time. The 70-bed hospital admitted its first patient on July 27 that same year.

Expanding to Meet Community Needs
Floyd Memorial HospitalSince 1953, Floyd Memorial has emerged into a 215-bed regional healthcare provider, serving a seven-county region. Its medical staff is a well-built team of over 400 healthcare professionals, representing a variety of specialities. The hospital currently has over 1200 associates.

Since its first expansion, in the late 1950s, Floyd Memorial has responded to community needs and national trends by undergoing numerous renovations to provide the latest healthcare services to the region.

In the 1980s, the hospital initiated a multi-million-dollar construction project Nursing Unitincluding the addition of a 21-bed Skilled Nursing Unit. The 90's offered a state-of-the-art 110,000 square foot Outpatient Services Center and a new Emergency Center. Another feature included immediate accessibility to the hospital from State Street and the helipad located atop of the Professional Arts Building by means of a new pedway connecting the two buildings together. The three-stage construction project was completed in 1997.

Nineteen-ninety-four was a busy year for the hospital. Floyd Memorial, Clark Memorial and Jewish Hospital joined forces to open the Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital. The facility, located in New Albany, is managed by Frazier Rehab Center.

Along with its renovations and partnerships, the hospital underwent a major change in 1994 -- its name. The name, which had already been changed to Floyd Memorial, was altered to more accurately reflect the multi-faceted services it provides the families of our communities. The new name would be Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.
